Continuous World-Class Performance
| 1989 1992 |
Invented
and Patented ERD Technologies
Invented more than 10 drilling technologies designed
specifically for extended reach wells in the course
of four years, propelling the company further
into the extended reach drilling market. |
| 1989 |
First
Negative Weight Wells
Helped develop technologies to drill the first
negative weight extended reach wells. These technologies
are still being used today for negative weight
wells. |
| 1992 |
First
Complex Well in Australia
Supervised the successful drilling of a complex
well in Australia that was considered impossible
to drill. The project was completed on time
and under budget.
|
| 1996 |
Engineering
Excellence Award
Received the Engineering Excellence Award from
the Australian Institute of Engineers for the
companys contributions and accomplishments
in the field of extended reach drilling. |
| 1997 |
Corporate
Relocation to Houston, Texas
As the companys technological advances became
more greatly recognized, K&M Technology relocated
its central operations from Perth, Western Australia,
to Houston, Texas. |
| 1998 |
First
Edition of Extended Reach Textbook Published
Drilling Design and Implementation for Extended
Reach and Complex Wells written, gaining industry-wide
acceptance from major oil and service companies
worldwide. |
| 1998 |
Longest
Deep Water ER Well in North America
Assisted in drilling the longest extended reach
well in North America. K&M Technologys
training, design and surveillance services helped
surpass the projects estimated schedule
and cost. |
| 1998 |
First HERDIT
Schools
K&M began offering extended reach and complex
well training to the industry. These programs
are now recognized among the best drilling operational
training programs in the industry. |
| 1998-99 |
Two Longest
Reach Wells in North America
K&M provided design services, training and
wellsite surveillance to these projects that set
the benchmark for extended reach wells in North
America. One of the projects had attempted to
drill the wells twice and had failed prior to
K&M involvement. |
| 1999 |
Fit-for-Purpose
Well Designs for Small Rigs
Drilled a 21,000-foot extended reach well at 80o
using the operators existing rig package,
which used two 1,000 hp pumps, a 1,500 hp draw
works and a portable top drive. Continue to design
programs using operators existing rigs. |
| 2000 |
2000 Began
applying ERD practices back to standard deviated
wells for performance improvement |
| 2001 |
2001 Deepwater
Performance Record in GOM
Working with Conoco's Magnolia drilling team to
bring the Magnolia 3 well in at 1.8 days/1000'
BML. The fastest drilling time to that depth in
the Gulf of Mexico. This represented a savings
of US$4.7 million to Conoco over AFE and ~US$7.0
million over their previous best performance.
Extended Reach Performance Record in GOM
Working with a major operator, the longest extended
reach well in the Gulf of Mexico at this time
was brought in World Class time saving the
operator ~US$4.0 million over AFE. |
| 2002 |
2002 First
Floated casing runs from Semi-submersible
Working with ChevronTexaco in the North Sea, a
comprehensive planning effort was put into the
very challenging 9-5/8" casing run for the
Captain Project. This floated casing run represents
the first ever attempt at floating casing from
a floater. |
| 2002 |
Horizontal
Drilling Performance Record - Venezuela -
Working with Ameriven (ChevronTexaco) in Venezuela,
K&M helped this team to eclipse its existing
record of 8,545 ft in 24 hrs with its new record
of 8,900+ ft in 24 hrs. |
| 2003 |
BP Chirag A18 – Azerbaijan
Successfully drilled & completed despite failures on previous two wells |
| 2003 |
Hibernia B16-36
Well was successfully drilled and completed. K&M was involved from initial feasibility, detailed planning, and training. |
| 2003 |
Captain B development in UK North Sea
First floated casing runs from a floating rig. |
| 2003 |
Ringhorne ER Project in Norway
Very complex T&D and ECD project. First floated casing in Norway. Involved from initial feasibility to implementation. |
| 2003 |
Hibiscus C2
Well was successfully drilled and completed in Trinidad despite failure on previous 2 attempts. The key was reformed drilling practices. |
| 2003 - 2004 |
Sakhalin Island
Drilled and cased first two wells with longest well drilled to XXm. K&M did everything from initial feasibility, detailed planning, rig specification, and training. |
| 2004 - |
Chevron Petronius A9 – US GOM
Chevron called on K&M for a follow-up to the record setting A20 well drilled in 2004. The A9 well was successfully drilled to 31,481’ MD (25,647’ reach) in 1800’ of water in the Gulf of Mexico, which defines itself as the longest well in the world drilled in ≥1000’ of water. The well was specially engineered to incorporate valuable lessons learned on the A20 well, and featured a “systematic” integration of key features such as wellpath design, casing architecture, drillstring design, and a new fluids system. After the 7” liner was cemented on bottom, the Chevron Drilling Supervisor had this to say about our dedicated onsite staff that worked with rig site team throughout the duration of the project:
“…he (Tommy Bell) was instrumental in the success of not only the 7" liner job, but the entire well.” |
| 2005 - 2006 |
Shell L02FA104 – Dutch Sector, North Sea
K&M became involved in the playing stages of one of Shells most demanding HPHT/ERD wells in the Dutch Sector of the North sea early 2004. Through detailed planning, crew training, and onsite surveillance, K&M supported the operation from start to finish. The difficult drilling environment in Holland presented a few unexpected challenges during the operations phase, but were met with ingenuity and years of experience to overcome adversity. The Shell Drilling Superintendent had this to say about the onsite support provided by K&M’s Mike Broderick: “It has (the L02 well) certainly tested us all to the limit at various times, and only because of the expertise and personality of people like yourself has it be possible to overcome and deliver…I know the guys on the rig have taken may valuable lessons away from this well and many have come form you with the support of the K&M team.” |
| 2005 - 2006 |
Pohokura – Taranaki Basin, New Zealand
Years of planning led up to an innovative well design approach for New Zealand’s longest ERD wells POW-1, POW-2, and POW-3 (6445, 6985, and 7409m, respectively). Previous ERD wells drilled from land to offshore were fraught with hole problems and exorbitant trouble time. For the 2005-2006 campaign, a new approach was taken whereby the wells were slightly downsized (9 ½” instead of 12 ¼” hole), which removed contingency options, but dramatically reduced the risk of problems and the need for a contingency string in the first place. Through extensive training and onsite support, the project was completed relatively problem free, on time, and within budget. Shell Todd’s head of well engineering had this to say about K&M’s involvement…“A very worthy close out of the Pohokura drilling campaign, which has been a great operational success…..On the way to this success you managed to brake several records. I will only mention one as the list has become too long to quote. POW03 which is now the longest well in NZ at 7409m: a record which will stand for many years to come. |
